Dear Dr. Lastname:

Please consider this letter and the enclosed information (vita, references, and recent publications) as my formal application for the position of assistant professor of Management Information Systems as advertised on your university's website.

I received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in August 1994. I am currently an assistant professor in the department of Management Information Systems at Northeastern State University (NSU). My primary responsibilities include: advising students; maintaining the departmental website; and teaching courses in the following areas: Operating Systems, Website Management, Object Based Visual Programming, Fundamentals of Computer Usage, and Telecommunications.

While at NSU, I have demonstrated the potential to teach courses in information systems while also staying active in research and publishing. As an educator, I have developed courses that are both relevant and challenging. The courses are designed to provide students with immediate knowledge for the workplace, as well as providing them with a broader body of learning for future scholastic achievement. My experience has taught me that the best teachers challenge students to reach new heights by providing them with the information, assistance, and accountability necessary to achieve their goals.

As a researcher, my primary interests include information systems, software engineering, networks, computer graphics, and the development of Web-based application tools. While I have published numerous papers on these subjects, there still remains a great deal of exciting work left to be done in these areas.

Prior to working at NSU, I was a research associate at the University of Tennessee. As a research associate, I maintained the University's homepages and conducted workshops/seminars to help faculty, staff, and students develop websites. As UTK Webmaster, I made the University's homepages an organized, attractive, and resourceful website by (1) designing and creating advanced computer graphics, (2) making the entire UTK webspace searchable, and (3) developing numerous Web-based applications. The workshops and seminars that I conducted allowed me to further develop my teaching and communication skills. This interaction also made me strongly committed to the integration of technology into the curriculum.

Altogether, my unique blend of work experience, my computer science background, and strong research record, and demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching, makes me well qualified for the position. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss the requirements of the position and my qualifications for it. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

William Rosener, Ph.D.
